RISC OS wish list
Applications
- MP3 player that WORKS (2013-08-10) - 90 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + All the others don't work on my ARM710 RISC OS 3.60 box :-(
- + Anyone got a comment on this?
- + You can't write a proper MP3 player for a i386 computer either
- + here i'm happy with MP3-Players for riscos
- + what about that lovely ROL mp3 jukebox?
- + I have created a blind / taskwindow SA Car MP3 / OGG / AC3 Music Player
This uses DigtalCD's DiskSample module....This work perfectly!
- God damn web browser! (2013-04-09) - 82 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + Please give us the ultimate Web Browser. Browse is visually Ace, but is starting to fall behind (obviously) in features. I heard that talks are still in progress with Pace as to RISCOS Ltd right to the source code for Browse. Ideally a web browser should have : Great speed (Our machines are still limited by pure processing power - arm coding=essential!), Support for new stuff. In that order! RiscOS apps have always thrived on speed (Artworks being a prime example in it's day).
- + Work on Webite then! It's in M/C and is Open Source. If we get enough people working on it it'll be the job!
- - Wish I had the know-how to help with the technical side, but last time I tried it, Webite was Soooo slow compared to Browse, and slower still compared to Fresco (although it did look nicer:-)
- + Mozilla (www.mozilla.org) is starting to look really good; there are probably more people working on it than RISC OS and its applications comnined.
- + a browser that didn't restrict web-site developers by demanding that all javascript should be so dumb you can only just about get it to do simple addition would be nice - a decend object model and some reliable way of accessing it would be fairly novell as well.
- + Developer are looking at mozilla code to see how it/part of it can ber reimplemented for Risc OS.
- + How about a port of Opera for RISC OS, there is a BeOS and EPOC port already. It's so much better than other browsers that it's the only browser I can tollerate using.
- + I see no problem with Castle/Oregan's Oregano browser! £58 of pure goodness!
- + I'd rather the RISC OS scene concentrated on improving existing browsers, esp. Oregano, before considering developing whole new ones.
- + We could do with a port of IE (but more stable :P)
Couldn't someone make a free browser that is activeley developed? Arcweb was good when it was in it's prime :-/
- + We now have NetSurf in the makings which is intended to be a HTML4 CSS1 browser. Also it will be open source! :D http://netsurf.sf.net/
- - IE? IE!!? Are you insane?
- + A port (pie in the sky I know) of IE would be great - granted I used to despise it too, but at least MS have made some decent imrovements (even standards!) and it's actually now the browser I find least annoying - and I never thought I say that!
- + A port of IE? Try Opera or Firefox folks, a million miles better. A port of Opera would be particularly good.
- support MPEG Video with REPLAY (2013-08-10) - 65 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + Play and create MPEG Videos
- + We really need a decent Media Player full stop. Something that can play AVI, MPEG, RM, etc etc. I know that WSS did MovieFS some considerable time ago but it was never updated and has now dissappeared.
- + Totally agree. We need an decent, OS-bundled media player that can play video, audio, photo, etc. If only there was a RISC OS version of Winamp.
- + thank you
- ROM apps (2013-08-30) - 39 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + Edit, Draw and Paint should conform to the Style Guide.
- + Rewrite Edit Draw and Paint.
- - Oh yes. I can see someone deciding to re-write Edit, Draw and Paint...
- + I have often wished that the "sprites in a
spritefile" visual metaphor conformed to the same
rules as the "files in a directory" metaphor.
A rewrite of Paint to make sprite handling
conform to the rules we all expect of the
filer would be pleasant.
- + Just forget Edit and supply StrongEd or Zap? Has someone taken over StrongEd's development yet?
- + Guttorm Vik's abandonment of StrongED seems a prime opportunity for ROL to snap it up. This is the only piece of software of mine which my PC owning friends want!
- - re: the last - sign that didn't work : <giggle> (or [Giggle] if /that/ doesn't come out)
- + Rewrite the ROM apps to be fully PCA compliant.
- + Though not strictly a ROM app, !SciCalc looks dire and should be improved to look more like the version that was seen in the screenshots for Phoebe - the same for !CDPlayer too.
- + I remember there was a few prototype pen computer been made by Acorn Computer and ETRI. PCA is absolotly ideal for this type computer. This is better than OLE and I believe is future proof!
- + could somone couple the load/save bits of draw to changeFSI to allow it to load and save in multiple formats.
- + Simply replace Edit with Zap. Zap rocks and you know it!
- - Hold on. I wrote the original version of SciCalc back in the late 80s. At the time it looked cool. It was also a demo for how to write in BASIC. I am just happy to see it still exists.
- Web Browset that will allow full screen (2013-07-22) - 31 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + Like IE5 does.. but not as buggy! I personally use the full screen mode here at college, but at home, Oregano annoys me 'cos it won't do it without putting the title bar there. a way of taking the title bar off would be great!
- - Browse does this already
- + yeah, but browse is so far behind
- + It might be added to NetSurf
- IM client (2013-08-21) - 28 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + Jabber compatible secure instant messaging client.
- Full motion video system (2013-08-30) - 24 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + :-/
- + A proper multimedia playback engine (for all sound/movie formats)
- + Like SoundCon in C + MovieFS.
- + Why not just a proper front end for replay 3 with the controls of ARPlayer, but multitasking. Maybe a nice 'video recorder' style frontend?
- + this has been needed for a long time
- + First lets get the rights to Replay 3 secured from Pace. At this time we have nothing.
- + Amendment to last statement :Pace, and WSS, and x, and y and z and ... (ad infinitum)
- - I thought Replay was still with E14, not Pace.
- ChangeFSI and multiple graphics (2013-04-09) - 24 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + (a) ChangeFSI should keep the previous converted image when you convert another one - i.e. work with several at once
(b) When converting from a sprite file that contains several sprites, be able to choose which sprite you convert, or do all of them at once.
(c) Be able to convert and save batches of files automatically
- + And it should be faster, and provide all functions of
!Translatr.
- + And allow you to work while it's working away - it's so sloooooow!
- + Yeah, and howabout ripping all the arm code out of it and putting it all into a seperate file - I'd cut down on memory consuption and might also speed it up a bit!
- + ChangeFSI is a god of apps! There is a true killer app! The standard of 256col images it makes from JPEGS just blows windows away! I've never seen anything with it's dithering power on Windoze!
- + Yeah, it's a great app and its dithering is superb, but it's sooooo slooooooooow!
- + And the damned templates need a redoing!
- + It pisses me off that ChangeFSI cannot handle palettes (when editing Doom graphics), and that it can't handle transparency (when converting icons).
- - Seems to cope fine with Doom graphic palettes here. 'course, you could report the bug to the RISC OS Doom maintainer. Or the ChangeFSI maintainer.
- + Who's developing ChangeFSI inside RISC OS Ltd.? Or is it PD now?
- ARM development environment (2013-08-30) - 23 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + Perhaps the bundling of an ARM development environment with future ROS issues (there is a big demand for ARM developers, perhaps ROS and its hardware partners should look at this niche as well as the traditional "Enthusiast"/"Educational" role).
- + Well went we have something complete based on GCC this will be possible. Development of GCC and RISC OS class libraries continues, support tools are coming shortly.
- + Has to be bundled with the OS distribution.
- - Hmm... An OS that costs 6 grand. That'd sell well.
- + Since when did GCC cost 6 grand? Leave the ARM tools for those who want to pay for them, but supply a usable GCC setup on the OS CD - if people want to use it they can, but non-techies will never know it's there.
- - GCC is available. Why supply it with the OS ? Surely it's of absolutely no use to users, and programmers can go and get it for themselves and know what they're doing.
- + BASIC is dead and burried and currently the only language available for RO. If you want a shareware/freeware industry (primarily staffed by students - eg ME) then we would like to be able to practise a language that actually counts for something out in the real world and makes learning to programme easier than on a PC - the current GCC is a pig so a new development environment would be a great boon to a declining shareware/freeware development environment.
- + Basic lives on here, but I agree the GCC enviroment is not nice, I would like to see a development platform with a nice gui for setting up libraies & linkers.
- + Splutter! BASIC will NEVER be dead! It's completely future comaptible, where 32bit RO and other things like that are concerned, and things like the built in Assembler are excellent. It's like bash is for linux - if I want to just write a quick script that obey files can't do, I use BASIC
- + "ARM hardware" that allows an "ARM development environment" sounds like a good idea to me - especially if ARM want to show off what their CPU's can do. (This could target RoS hardware instead of PC's at corporates developing ARM "stuff"). Some company IS gonna do this one day anyway, so if its not done thru RoS then that would be sad IMHO.
Also, easy installs of ANY development tools (including GCC) is a must - this encourages ppl to learn and/or actually write code instead of messing about with installs that are difficult and cause frustration. Once you've got a development platform that works, you tend to show others (get the idea?)
- - Just supply me with a modern enough machine and set of uptodate manuals and I can update BBC Basic.
I could add , Record Structures, Classes and all the other things it deserves.

- Desktop Development Environment (2013-04-09) - 21 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + To go around something like the GCC port. - A nice visual environment of some kind!
- + Good idea. Get to it :-)
- Secure FTP (2013-07-22) - 15 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + FTP client that supports FTP/TLS
- Printer Driver creator (2013-04-09) - 11 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + Application that reads the printer driver definition files usually in PC format supplied with new printers and creates a RiscOS equivalent.
- - Would that not be too hard to create since the PC drivers are practically programs in their own rights?
- Help system (2013-08-30) - 8 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + Better HELP. (Again this may have been addressed in ROS4). The only thing better in Microsoft Windows than ROS is the HELP system (minus the bugs of course ;-)
- - What?! MS Windows help blows. Or maybe it's just the way it does some things really badly that just colour my opinion. Tool tips are nice but we have interactive help which is at least as good (the PD & RO4 ones anyway), if not better. And for full documentation we have StrongHelp which is definitely better than the Windows equivalent. HTML seems to be quite common too although I still prefer StrongHelp because it's small and fast compared to a web browser.
- + I'm with you on StrongHELP, maybe we should decide to standise on this for help systems, possibly intergrate fully with OS (and for that matter integrating StrongED would be nice too - apologies to Zap fans - but I think StrongED's more friendly for end-users)
- + Agreed! Interactive Help is a really nice thing, but only for short hints. If you need to give comprehensive information you need other possibilities to display them. I would prefer an application like the new Windows98 help system based on HTML/XML, possibly making use of CHTML.
- + If it's any consolation, I'm currently making a HTML based Help System for RISC OS. Keep an eye in the announcements newsgroup for it.
- + The first step to make the interactive help evolve is to break the system 236 characters barrier in the Wimp messages orginating from the helpful application.
- Old Style Edit/Draw/Paint Select Menus (2013-07-22) - 4 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + These applications new menus are so horrible in RISC OS Select it's not worth using them anymore. Go back to the old menus.
- - I like the new ones. Much better organised
- CD control application (2013-05-14) - 4 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + Oooh. I want one!
- - I'd rather have a CDFS rewrite first.
- + with cd-rw writing abilities
- + Speak to WSS about RWs.
- + exactly what would you like to control then?
- + Buy an MMK of cerilica,it can control Digital CD from other windows and comes with a variety of other features (go to www.cerilica.com)
- App that loads a file of type reccomend (2013-04-09) - 4 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + A file somewhere in boot containing individual messages for when filetypes cannot be loaded.
- + basically when you run a file that no apps can load you get the error 'An application that loads a file of this type has not been seen. etc'
Wouldn't it be nice if there was an individual message stored somewhere in !Boot that brought up a diferent message for different filetypes, that way messages could be plugged in by appliactions recommending programs to use or websites to obtain software to read the filetype.
It would be better than the current annoying message.
(Printed in red cos green is harder to read)
- + OK maybe it isnt in red, i forgot.
- SQL Relational Database (2013-07-22) - 3 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + Proper SQL database for RISC OS (Like squirrel but better). I'm thinking just port MySQL.
- - MySQL just isn't going to happen until we've got ourselves some form of half-decent multi-threading or at least preemptive multitasking. Writing network apps and apps with more than one connection to anything is tortuous as reentrant code is so very non-intuitive. Developers are put off and just don't bother. Yes. I agree in principle we need a relational database. FIRST, we need to sort out the scheduler and add a few more system calls.
- Integrated email/news fetcher (2013-08-30) - 2 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + Which also has a reader in it
- - We have this, it's called Messenger Pro
- Full ICQ version (2013-07-22) - -3 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + I just have the small version !natter but it is very bad! I want/need a full version, i cant ad someone withut to Registrate for many!
- + Just hack !Natter and use an old version.
- Java run time environment (kept upto date!!) (2013-07-22) - -10 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + It's gonna be needed to run full blown Java apps as well as Web applets anyway. Add an environment to code "real" Java - even better! ARM's Jazelle(TM) is out there . . . (or similar?) Can it be integrated with RoS (add on card? future hardware?) as a dedicated Java processor?
Yes, i realise its going to cost to get something working, but 000's of developers are going to want to retrain/learn Java [or alternatively .NET! :-( ] If you can't run Java on your PC (Note: Sun/M$ license wrangle), you've only got Solaris or Linux (Or take the easy way - stick with your PC and learn C#/.NET because "thats what you've already got") Meanwhile RoS gets pushed further away from mainstream applications/development towards oblivion? ;-(
Sorry to sound pessimistic, but I now feel very 'anxious' about this. IMHO, this IS THE "killer app" to kickstart the RoS market OR it becomes a missed opportunity with serious consequences. :-(
- DBMS over Interenet (RISC OS as server) (2013-07-22) - -11 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + Port of mySQL anyone? IMHO essential now if RISC OS is to move into a more mainstream desktop/server use and sell more boxes. BBC BASIC DB Drivers to access it! Just think, interactive web-sites in BBC BASIC - the start of a new revolution! ;-)

- Record a Macro in Draw (2013-04-09) - -15 - agree - disagree - follow up
- + It would be good if macros could be recorded in draw because I often have to do many tasks in draw for many files (the same task), wouldn't it be better if a button could be clicked on and all of these functions could be done at once.
- + To perform the same task on multiple objects in multiple files (at once?) would be super
